Research & Development

Fifty years ago doctors identified Candida albicans as a frequent cause of vagina, mouth, throat, athlete's foot and gastro-intestinal infections. Now it is well known to affect almost all body parts, organs and tissues and cells (John Parks Trowbridge and Morton Walker, 1986.)

Candida albicans is a yeast growth present in and on most of us which is normally controlled by our immune defenses and by the friendly bacterial flora (Probiotics such as Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium) present in that and on the body.

But when an ecological change takes place in the internal environment, our friendly flora tend to be decreased and our immune response becomes depressed. Then the yeast begins to increase in the body (called dysbiosis), especially in the small and large intestine.

These yeast colonies release 79 known powerful chemical substances against which the human body may create identifiable antibodies. Toxins excreted by the microbe may be absorbed in the bloodstream, causing such widely varying symptoms as severe menstrual cramps in women, lethargy, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic diarrhea, constipation, bladder/vaginal infections and penile irritations, asthma, migraine, headaches, depression, skin eruptions, oral thrush, chronic throat infections, diaper rash, hormonal problems, cravings for sweets, alcohol, fermented products, learning disabilities, mood swings, blood sugar problems, sleeping problems, arthritis, allergies, bloated ness, digestive problems, weight problems, acid pH and immune system problems.

Carlson (1983) reported the synergistic effect between C. albicans and Staphylococcus areus (the bacterium that cause wound infections) and toxic shock syndrome-associated mortality in mice. This concept could easily be applicable to other mammals such as humans, where Candida in synergism with other microbes may be lethal.

Who are more prone to Candida imbalances?

  • Patients who had as little as one course of antibiotics.
  • Those on hormonal replacement therapy or using cortico steroid products or even the birth control pill.
  • Multiple pregnancies cause Candida overgrowth, where babies may pick Candida up in the birth canal.
  • Stress has been shown to induce changes in the balance of the intestinal flora, resulting in reduction or disappearance of lactobacillus with subsequent overgrowth of already present Candida. (Chaitow and Trenev, 1990).
  • High blood sugar levels such as in a diabetic state or in a high sugar or artificial sweetener diet (Horowitz et al, 1984).
  • Radiation can cause great damage to the normal flora, either when direct X-rays or gamma radiation is performed medically or when radioactive materials are swallowed, because yeast dysbiosis is caused.
  • Truss (1983) proposed that mercury, used in dental fillings leaches into the body, inhibits enzyme action, disturbs utilization of nutrients and when converted to methyl mercury so disturbs the intestinal flora that an overgrowth of Candida is encouraged.
  • People on intravenous treatment for prolonged periods are prone to infections (T. Schumacher and Schumacher Lund).
  • People following a poor diet and drinking polluted (unfiltered) drinking water.
As Candida adheres tightly to the endothelial cells (due to the interaction of a mannoprotein adhesion to the epithelial cells) and may also in its more virulent form, the hyphal form, penetrate underlying tissue (Pendrak et al., 1995), supplying a probiotic in the diet, is not effective enough.

How to counteract Candida?

The yeast counts should be reduced first, by taking natural herbal substances such as supplied by the ingredients in "Micro-sweep" by Probiota Health, and only thereafter taking a good probiotic. The supplement "Oxygen -wise" which contains Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM) contributes further alleviates Candida as well as parasitic dysbiosis, because the sulphur molecule adheres to the cells in the colon's diverticulosis pockets and leaves a Teflon-like coating. Parasites and Candida cannot cling onto the pocket and are flushed out.

It is vital to follow a diet, that deprives the yeast of its main source of nutrition (sugar, lactose sugar-cows milk and fermented products), as well as taking the anti-Candida/parasitic supplement, Micro-sweep and a good probiotic such as AB-Lactics.
